I can't get rid of the Avast popup trying to sell me upgrades Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is to anyone who has long ago written off Norton, at least give it a try because my impression was that the 2009 edition is unlike anything they produced before (in a good way) and that's worth mentioning. However, I completely forgot about spyware, and since Avast detects spyware while AVG (free edition) does not, I suppose in the real world Avast would be a lot better.

Honestly, the thing installed in under a minute, without the need for a restart! The computer did not slow down whatsoever, and it just looked slick! That said, I did go back to Avast only because there was not enough feedback on its engine, and mere speed/aesthetic improvements will not suck me back into the Norton universe. Im pretty sure that the difference between Avast and AVG Pro would be approximately 1 to 1.5 and AV-comparatives percentages do not take spyware detection into account. I was shocked by just how many of the typical Norton issues have actually been fixed by Symantec.

(Bitdefender was not tested.) AVG AntiVirus Free: Security and privacy features Kaspersky got 100% in both total and protection accuracy in all three rounds. But because AVG had a few more false positives, both ended up with the same 98% total accuracy score. In January-March 2020, the corporate siblings' path diverged, with AVG getting 100% protection accuracy and Avast only 95%.
While AVG's most recent results are better than previous ones, both AVG and Avast have only just caught up to Microsoft, with 98% total accuracy, and 94% or 95% protection accuracy, in both the July-September and the October-December 2019 quarterly rounds. London-based SE Labs' scores are more nuanced and take account of how an antivirus program handles a piece of malware after detection.
